Interview with the "Down-Under" duathlete Matt Smith
Hello Matt,
in preview to Powerman Alsdorf in August 2021, we would like to introduce our athletes and get to know them:
Please, introduce yourself and highlight some important moments/successes as athlete
Hello, Im Matt Smith, a duathlete from Perth, Australia. I’ve competed at Alsdorf twice, finish 9th in 2018 and DNF in 2019 due to an injury.
How did you become a duathlete?
I started as a cross country runner in school. As I enjoyed cycling with my friends and in 2014 started doing some local triathlons. I decided I didn’t like swimming very much and stuck to duathlon as I’m much better at running and cycling.
From your personal perspective, what is special about the run-bike-run format of Powerman World Series?
The distance is the biggest challenge to me. It’s hard to run as fast as we can, then time trial for 60 km, and try run as fast again off the bike. I’ve learnt that lots of strength is required to be successful at this distance.
How often did you compete at Powerman Alsdorf and what is you personal highlight of this particular race?
I try to compete there every year. Obviously, due to COVID, and borders being closed in Australia, it is difficult but I will do my best to be there this year. I love the country and people of Germany, always so friendly and welcoming, and always make me want to return!
Have you participated in any other Powerman World Series races? If so, what is your „don’t-miss-race“?
I’ve competed in Malaysia, Austria, Portugal, Indonesia, Phillipines, Alsdorf, Arizona and Michigan (USA) and lastly Greece. They have all been unique in their own way, but I always say Alsdorf is my favourite Powerman Race of the year!
How does a typical training week looks like in your preparation for a Powerman race (apr. 2 month prior to the race)?
In Perth, we have not had lock down until very recently. So training has been good. I try run about 120 km a week and ride 300. I do lots of running races, too. So run training is extremely important to me. I train with Matthew Ramsden, who is an elite 1.500m runner and will be going to Tokyo this year. Our running squad is always working very hard.
Despite the current uncertainties of racing in 2021, do you have a competiton schedule in mind?
Australias borders are currently closed, meaning it is extremely hard to leave the country, and even harder to come back. At this point, Alsdorf and ITU Almere World Championships are the only 2 races I’m trying to attend this year. We will know later around July if I will be able to participate.
Last but not least: What are your best advices for athletes who want to participate in a Powerman race?
I always encourage people to try have fun in their first race. It’s going to be harder than you expect, so make sure you enjoy the race and learn as much as you can, so you can much faster in your second one!
Thanks for sharing your experiences and insights with us! We wish you the best for your individual and athletic goals.
We are excited to see you racing in Alsdorf on August 15th, 2021.
